Scope and Content

One page correspondence on tan Knights of Columbus Hall Camp Logan letterhead with matching envelope. Letter with horizontal trifold creases. Handwritten letter in fading black ink dated Oct 31, 1917. Letter outlines sleeping in tents with other Catholics at the camp and conditions being dusty, windy, and otherwise miserable except for meals being generally decent after the camp acquired a stove. Envelope has matching letterhead logo in the left corner. Addressed to: "Miss Josephine Raupp Arlington Heights, Cook Co. Ills." Postmarked: "Houston TX, Nov 1, 1917 Logan Branch." Upper right corner cleanly cut out where the stamp should be. "Dear Cousin Josephine, I am all well and hope the same of you. I am now a far ways away from home. This is some camp we have to sleep in tents here --eight men in each tent. There four Catholics in my tent, that makes it nice. They come from all over the state of Ill. This is dusty place it is all sand. When it gets a little windy, it blows it like if it was snow. The first day I was here it was offull. Cant keep clean here-- the sand is loose and it lays about 6 inches thick on some places. We look dusty like pigs at night. I never seen anything like it yet. A person can wash all the time. The Co. I am in is good though. They said we can go church tomorrow. We got mass at 7 o clock. I thought we wouldn't have no church here. That was something I was afraid of when they said I have to leave for Texas. But there is churches hear just like at Camp Grant. This was some long ride I thought we would never get here. We was 2 days and three nights on the train. We only got two meals on the train and when we got that we didn't get much and was all cold eats. But the eats we get here are good-can't complain about that. Thea sure better than at Camp Grant, but I would sooner be there-- I could go home some times. This is a far ways off --1800 miles. It is warm here at daytime just like in Summer and at night it is cold, at least it is as long as I am here. After we get our stove in it will be alright. Have to be-can't change. How is the weather up there? I suppose it is cold up there too. I suppose…is home yet and Gerald Weidner too. Didn't hear any news for almost two weeks already. This is all the news for this time. Will close with love to all. From Cousin Bernard Co 132 Infantry Camp Logan, Houston TX"
