Description

Early iron motor mounted to wooden base with engraved text plate. 1/3 Horsepower electric direct current motor with separate hand-controlled modern rheostat. Motor has cloth covered electric wire connections. Rheostat is cylindrical-shaped with wire wrapped around the center. It was used as an adjustable resistor used to manipulate the current or varying resistance in an electrical circuit. Its resistance element is the metal wire. Two copper hand-engraved text plates screwed into the wood. Copper plate mounted to the rheostat. Base has brass edges. Plates text: Electric Motor model CW No 1/10; patent June 30, 1891; Crocker-Wheeler; Arm No. 5935-17 wire; Owned by Jack A. Wehner; Arlington Hts." Long brass plate mounted to rheostat text: "Manual Controled rheostat." Rheostat label markings:" SC26A; DHMS-11; James G. Biddle CO. Philadelphia, Pat. No. 2000849."
