Pastel portrait of J. Howard Smith
Given in his memory by Gladys Smith Cubbage, daughter of J. Howard Smith
J. Howard Smith was the founder of various fish processing plants from Maine to Port Arthur, TX
In the late 30's, he came into the Bay and bought four fish processing plants and boats, and also the Morris Fish Property on Cockrell's Creek. Through the years, he and his two sons owned approximately 175 menhaden fish boats. His captains and crews came mostly from Lancaster and Middlesex Counties; in addition, his ship repair facility at the Morris Fish property provided excellent winter employment for the area watermen. He provided better wages and working conditions than other factories at the time.Collection
