Description

The "Louise" was built in 1922 in Milford, DE, by W.G. Abbot for Marine Products, Co., Reedville, VA. She was reputed to be the largest wooden mendaden boat built. She was the first oil burner and the first menhaden boat to be refrigerated (along with the "Gloucester"). She was named for a daughter of John A. Palmer, owner of the company. Her engines came from the Steam Transport Caponka, which is the partially photgraphed vessel from which one can view the end of Main Street, Reedville, with the children aboard and is used by the RFM to show the various buildings at that time (about 1921). Capunka was a wooden Transport vessel built for use during WWI and sold as surplus after the war. Louise was sold as a result of the bankruptcy of John A Palmer's company (Marine Products Co.) in 1927. She foundered near Cape Hatteras while freighting bananas, sometime after 1931.
