Biography
The Hartman's ran a farm, which was considered necessary industry - so they should have been protected from deportation. Magda was also her mother's caregiver. When the news came that girls between the ages of 16-32 had to go to government service, Magda told her mother she'd be back in a few hours - no one thought they would take her because she was a caregiver. She was deported with her cousin, Olga, to Auschwitz. Letters between another cousin, Lenka Herzka, and the family back home reveal the girl's parent's innocence : "why haven't the girls written? Did they get the money and food we sent? Tell them to write." It is only when Lenka writes "They are with Uncle Kaddish" that the family realizes the girls are dead.Education
