Biographical Information

Biography

Peshy (her nickname) grew up with Bertha and was her best friend. They were deported together on the first transport, 25 March 1942. When they were relocated from Auschwitz I to Birkenau, the two friends worked in the Leichencommando, collecting dead bodies. They were in Block 27 (known as the Orthodox block) and slept on the same koya (bunk) with 8 other girls from home. (See Koya artifact for names.) They held a secret seder on Pesach 1943. Bertha maintains that Peshy saved her life. Bertha's head was shaved for a 7th time as punishment in 1943; she was suicidal and went to grab the wire. Peshy prevented her and helped her recover her sense of dignity despite the shaving. Peshy contracted typhus probably in 1943. We don't have a death date for her. We do not know if anyone else in her family survived.
