Navy officer's sword named to Admiral Ferdinand Louis Reichmuth, b.1881 d.1978. World War II era.Context
In 1865, the Reichmuth family moved to Ripon and opened a confectionary and bakery. Ferdinand Reichmuth attended Ripon College before his appointment to the United States Naval Academy. He served in WWI and WWII. Reichmuth was a naval ordnance expert and assumed duty as Commander, Destroyers, and assumed duty as Commander, Destroyers, Atlantic Squadron in 1940. For his service, he was awarded: the Legion of Merit; Victory Medal, Atlantic Fleet Clasp; American Defense Service Medal, Fleet Clasp; American Campaign Medal; and awarded the War II Victory Medal.
The Naval officer’s sword was formally eliminated as a required part of the official uniform in 1942.Collection
