Civil Defense hard hat: Hat worn by Wm. Brandt, Civil Defense volunteer in mid 1950's in Ripon, WI, when Russian Communist aggression was feared in U.S. Workers were also trained in how to respond to any local disaster. White exterior with brown interior.Context
A column in a Ripon Press 1956 newspaper warned people not to assume that there was no need for “strong civil defense organization.” Some residents felt that even though Ripon was not one of the nation’s “critical target areas,” Ripon residents were “in the danger zone,” and “an enemy nuclear attack could leave hundreds of thousands of square miles contaminated.”
Brandt was a long-time resident of Ripon and was a Ripon college librarian for 27 years.Collection
