The Ladies Octette of Ripon, c1917. A concert troupe of young women.Context
A concert troupe of young women in Ripon, one of whom was Lillian Zobel. A 1917 Ripon Weekly Press article commented that their “…charming manners and exceptionally fine impersonations, both in song and dramatic achievements, held the large and enthusiastic audience…” Lillian Zobel, the accompanist, is noted as being “in a class by herself” and “a master of the situation.”
The newspaper also comments that, “The play at the close of the musical was too funny for anything and so amusing that all thought the affair was genuine, that the sick lady was really and truly ill, even though they knew to the contrary.”
The farcical premise of the musical featured in these photographs is as follows:
“Mrs. Languish, newly rich and in perfect health, is obsessed with the idea, so-called fashionable, that she is very ill. She has a notice sent to a paper offering five hundred dollars to that female physician who will cure her by some mysterious means, on condition, however, of “No Cure, No Pay.” Three physicians arrive and are unsuccessful. But a “Healing Medium,” in a trance, effects a complete cure.”
