Stephen Wamsley NicholsContext
The person in front row, center, is Stephen Wamsley Nichols, a Civil War hero, 1840-1901, who was a member of the First Wisconsin Cavalry, organized in Ripon. He was one of General Sherman’s favorite scouts and historian Samuel Pedrick tells us that he captured more than 20 Confederate prisoners, single handedly. Nichols was multiracial, an African-Narragansett.
This photograph is likely one taken for a 1st Cavalry Company D, G.A.R. reunion. Nichols attended many such reunions.Collection
