Description

Violin in case with bow, red silk cloth, also included memo from donor Margaret Gibson and picture of former owner/player Frank Rich with wife Addie of Rush Lake. (12/2012 Note: Picture and attached note in donor file.) Donor assumed Rich purchased the violin from Roy Nellis Jr. and that it was made by Roy Nellis Sr. - See typed note with picture. Genealogical search today of 12th U.S. Census 1900 to which the violin dates shows Daniel G. Nellis as born and living in Ripon and a Violin maker (see copy of census page in donor file). A hand written note inside the base side "F" hole says "Guiseppe Guarnerius model 1690. By D.G. Nellis 1900" confirms that the violin was made by Daniel G. Nellis, not Roy Nellis Sr. See Nellis family in Pedrick Genealogy. The Nellis family lived on Liberty St. in Ripon during 1890-1891. Violin case soiled, worn but intact except leather handle which is broken. How crumpled silk cloth inside case is used is not known. Violin intact except for 4 wire strings and many bow hair, hairs broken. Finish soiled and worn. Probably requires repair but functional. Violin stored in Pickard House basement Artifact Storage Room. Papers related to violin's history are in donor's file folder. 12/2012 Note: Records that we can find do not show Roy Nellis, Jr. Succession is from Daniel Nellis, violin maker, to Roy Nellis.
