A late 1800s miniature photo album, or gem album. It is bound in red leather and measures only 1 3/4 inches by 1 3/4 inches. The brass clasp is still intact. Inside, the pages have oval cut-outs for gem size portraits. Most cut-outs are empty, only a few photos remaining. The album has some handwritten names on two of the photographs. One has yet to be identified. The other name has been identified as Lela Brandt Schmoekel. See Pedrick Genealogies.Context
In 1904, Lela married August Schmoekel. She was a life-long resident of the Ripon community. She was a member of the First Congregational church of Ripon, and of the Pilgrim Rebekah Lodge. She died at the age of 84 in 1962. She is buried in Hillside Cemetery in Ripon. It is interesting to note that there are two artifacts in our collection that once belonged to Lela and were subsequently inherited by two owners over the years before finding there way to the Society. They are two iron stone dinner plates with blue patterns, dating 1904-1936. See 2006.0078.0006 and 2006.0077.0002.Acquisition
