Jerabek Family file contains newspaper articles about the family. Dan, aka Tuba Dan, was active in the polka community including a radio show on the Ripon station.Context
As one of nine siblings, "Tuba Dan" began his musical journey on the French horn before switching to the tuba at age twelve to earn some money and help support his family.
At 20 years old he started a weekly polka-themed radio show on Hometown Broadcasting. On the last Sunday of the month, he would host a gospel special.
Dan wore many hats. In addition to playing the tuba, he worked as a mail carrier for 20 years, served as Ripon's Santa for 16 years alongside his wife Lila “Corky” Jerabek (who played the role of Mrs. Claus), and even became a substitute teacher, covering a wide range of subjects beyond music.
Dan served as President of the Polka Hall of Fame from 1990-1998, which served as a nonprofit to recognize musicians and ballroom operators who encouraged ‘old-time music’.
He also won nearly every award available from the Wisconsin Music Hall of Fame, including a Lifetime Achievement award in 2008/2009.Collection
