Description

Quilt made in bowtie pattern, also called necktie design. Found in collection. All we know is that it was donated by the Banville family. Record is found in Society Artifact Notebooks under Banville #234, handmade quilt. We do not know whether or which of the Banvilles might have sewn this quilt. Some evidence exists that bow tie quilts were used in the Underground RR to as symbols for safe passage or landmarks. There is no evidence specifically linking this quilt to the Underground RR. The bow ties are made of colored and patterned fabrics, with white and black patterns in the background. The underside of the quilt is white with a small red floral print. As of 2016, stains are evident throughout but still displayable.
