Description

A. B. Chase Company reed (pump) organ, c1885.

Context

The A.B. Chase Company made pump organs from 1875 to 1900 for use in the home. Because of this, these organs were often called "parlor organs." The organ made sound as air generated by pumping by the pedals flowed past a vibrating piece of metal called a reed. Since there was no electric lighting during this time, there are oil lamp holders on each side of the organ to provide necessary light. This organ was owned by the Michael Krause Jr. family. ln 1888 Michael Krause Jr. (1852-1924) married Emma Busian (1863-1948). They had three children and moved to 833 Watson Street in 1895. ln 1938, their daughter LaVerna Krause (1898-1983) and her husband Clayton Tinkham (1898-1975), both 1920 graduates of Ripon College, moved into the house at 833 Watson with their three children.
