The Ripon Historical Society was founded at the suggestion of Reuben Gold Thwaites, the second director of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. He wanted local societies to work with the State Society in the collection and preservation of Wisconsin history. The Ripon Society, established in 1899, was the second society formed in part for this purpose.
