This black sweater with an orange “R” patch was awarded to one of the first-ever female athletes at Ripon High School, Sue Hardin. Hardin graduated from Ripon High School in 1975, three years after the civil rights law, Title IX, was enacted. For two years, starting in 1973, she played volleyball for the high school. During her senior year, she received her varsity letter.
At the time, Hardin and many other people did not think that women's sports would last, “They [boys] didn't really take us and our teams very seriously, and we certainly did not present much of a threat to the athletics program and the ‘audience share’ at least as far as I could see…We still felt pretty separate, but at least we had a chance to play,” recalls Hardin.
The civil rights law, Title IX, was enacted in 1972, which states that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” This means that both males and females cannot be excluded from educational opportunities, including sports.
Sweater has cream stripe with orange strip through it. Orange '75 on right sleeve. Orange R. White tage on inside AMF Tennessee American. Size 38.Collection
