Woman's cream, red and blue colored patriotic cape. Has 34 stars embroidered in white on blue collar, fabric is all cotton and plain weave except cream base which has same color fine pattern. All hand sewn. Red panels applied to cream base. Stained, discolored, worn along one front edge and has a few small holes in body. Intact enough for display. Probably dates to C. 1862-63 or Civil War era as Kansas became the 34th state in 1861 and West Virginia in 1863. Donor states cape was hand sewn by Bertha Harris Arnold. If the number of stars indicates the cape's age and this is likely it could not have been sewn by Bertha Harris Arnold who was born in 1867. It was more likely, made by Bertha's mother who was Elizabeth Hargrave Harris of Ripon. See Hargrave-Harris-Arnold family tree in archives.
