Late 19th century dress, black with floral pattern and green trim.Use
This dress was worn to the World’s Fair, Chicago, Columbian Exposition in 1893. The dress is said to have been paired with a green velvet purse, black hat, and brown shoes. The dress has boning in the bodice, used to support the shape created by the cut of the fabric. The dress shows signs of transformation over time. The ruffled, white lace around the collar is believed to have been added later. Judging by alterations and signs of repair inside the waist band, this garment was likely worn for other purposes other than the World’s Fair and deemed suitable for multiple occasions.Context
