Octagon-shaped architecture was a fad of the nineteenth century, and Ripon once had several octagon houses and an octagon shaped school. The only octagon building remaining in Ripon is the 1850 Jacob Woodruff House located at 610 Liberty Street which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This untitled painting shows an octagon-shaped house, likely in Hudson, Wisconsin. As the first female full professor and first female chairperson of her department at Ripon College, Ogilvie made a name for herself working as a painter and printmaker. She was born in Argentina, and at the age of 24 she was awarded a scholarship to study at Indiana University. In 1975 Ogilvie started teaching at Ripon College and continued her work there until 1993. During this time, she received the prestigious Fulbright Scholar award for her distinctive artwork. Ogilvie's art was inspired by post-impressionism, and she often incorporated vivid colors into her scenes. This style was also partially derived from art that she saw during her travels in Europe, Mexico, and Costa Rica, and the vibrant colors she witnessed in rain forests and wildlife sanctuaries. Like her inspiration, Ogilvie's artwork is international and has been displayed in over seventy exhibitions across the United States, Latin America, and Europe. Her works are in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Bibliothèque Nationale (National Library) of Paris, and more locally in the collections of Ripon College and the Oshkosh Public Museum.
