The two commemorative medals were given by the City of Ripon, England, to the City of Ripon, Wisconsin. They are in a leather case which has the following inscribed on the cover "RIPON MILLENARY FESTIVAL-PRESENTED TO RIPON, WISCONSIN, BY THE COMMITTEE OF THE ABOVE FESTIVAL IN COMMEMORATION OF THE MILLENARY OF THE ANCIENT CITY OF RIPON 1886." A description of the medals is printed on a sheet of paper with the medal box.
One side of the coins features the traditional “wakeman’s horn,” used by the Hornblowers of Ripon, England.
Ripon, Wisconsin was officially named after the ancient cathedral city of Ripon in North Yorkshire, England. The name was suggested in 1849 by early settler John Scott Horner to honor his ancestral home.
The cities share deep historical ties, highlighted by the English city sending its mayor and a delegation to Wisconsin for the US Bicentennial in 1976.Collection
