The book follows Henry ("Hennery") Peck, a mischievous and incorrigible prankster, and his long-suffering father, "Pa," whose attempts to discipline his son are consistently outwitted. Unlike earlier mischievous characters like Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn, Hennery's pranks were famously mean-spirited and designed specifically to humiliate his father and authority figures.
