Description

A commemorative plate that is 10 1/2" diameter, white china, with gold, blue and rust red decorations. Back of plate reads, "The Ripon Cathedral Plate 672-1972," with more explanation, and #703 Spode. Plate is housed in a black box with a cloth cover. Box is hinged, having 2 brass closures. Accompanying the plate are 1) a pamphlet describing the Spode "Limited Edition," 2) a certificate for plate #703, 3) A January 29, 1976, letter from the Very Reverend Edwin le Grice, The Minster House, Ripon, England, to Henry P. Pommer, Dean of the College, Ripon, Wisconsin, and 4) a copy of Henry Pommer's reply on Feb. 23, 1976. Both letters concern the purchase and value of these commemorative plates. It is not known when Don Thomann acquired this plate.

Context

Ripon, England, where the cathedral is located, is the ancestral home of John Scott Horner who named the City of Ripon.
