Quilt made by Caroline Hill (Mrs. Hazen R.) for niece Miss Clara Bloom ca. 1895. "Always kept folded on back of love seat" written in ink on back. Accession #A69-92-1 with "47" written underneath. Colorful pineapple pattern with light pink mesh on top. Light pink ruffle edge and light pink back. Edging torn in places and discolored. Small stains on edges and bigger stains on back. Made for "Display Only". Netting possibly added later to help preserve silk.
Caroline was born in 1840, Lewis County, NY. Married Hazen Richard Hill in 1860. Hazen moved to Ripon in 1849. Caroline died in 1919.
05/2026: Caroline's maiden name was Windecker. Hazen speaks of her in his 1858 journal. See 2006.0307. Hazen bought the Spring Grove Resort on the south shore of Green Lake in 1878. The family ran the hotel and lived nearby until 1901, when Hazen retired and his son took over. After Hazen's death in 1903 Caroline lived in Ripon until her death in 1919.Acquisition
