Description

8" x 4 3/4" x 7/8" wooden sign painted white with black lettering "Tur zu!" which is a contraction of "Machst du die Tur zu!" freely translated meaning "Close the door!" The donor has had the sign packed away for 56 years. He removed it from an outhouse located next to the Central Wisconsin canneries where he was doing summer employment in 1946. The sign was nailed to the door. There was a German Prisoner of war camp at that location on the east side of Douglas St. ( now Chiquita Cannery ) during WWII. See letters relating to this donation in Tinkham Donor File dated Sept 18 and Oct 3, 2002. Dates to 1946 or earlier in WWII. Board is soiled from use and has four holes where screws were discolored by rust. Board and lettering intact.
