Description

10 1/2" x 10 1/2" hand painted sign made of material similar to poster board. Text is all in black advertising "J.H. Conlon, Manufacturer and Dealer in Harness', Saddles, Blankets, Nets, Whips, Trunks, Valises, etc. -215 Main St. Ripon." Pedrick genealogy states J.H. Conlon b. in Ireland 1838 came to U.S. and lost a limb in Civil War 1862. Discharged honorably in 1863. Went into harness business in Beaver Dam until 1892 when he moved to Ripon and continued in same business. He died Feb 6, 1900. Sign probably dates to 1892-1900. Sign discolored, torn along top edge but all legible. Shows evidence of pasting on back. Painter not known. Stored in Artifact Storeroom in Pickard House.
