20 mm shell manufactured by Speed Queen during WWII which has been made into a souvenir cigarette lighter. the lighter has been inserted into the core of the shell from its back end, and then mounted inside the end of the casing end which holds the shell. Both are mounted vertically on a grey marble-like base and about 8 1/4" tall from base to top a black and gold Speed Queen logo is applied to one end of surface. Shows use, soil and logo legible but worn. In two moveable parts. Not dated but post 1946. To be stored with local Ripon collection in storeroom, Pickard House.Context
From 1942 to 1945, Speed Queen halted its commercial laundry equipment production and ran its factories 24/7 to support the war effort. During this time, they manufactured 20mm shells as well as metal components for airplanes, tanks, and guns.Acquisition
