Description

A three-color silkscreen print on natural linen depicting herb plants placed in vessels of copper, wood, ceramic and glass with the corresponding herb names. The matching napkin has a one-color silkscreen print with multiple herb names in calligraphy; see image below. This set was produced in at least two colorways: brown and pink. This example is in brown. At bottom center, the quote, “Herbs too she knew and well of each could speak”, is from the poem, “The Schoolmistress”, by English poet William Shenstone (1714-63); see web link for full poem. This placemat set is listed in the January 1960 Country Prints price list in two colorways (pink or brown), and appears in the c.1960 brochure “Mat Sets by Robert Darr Wert/Country Prints”, c.1960; see images.
