Name/Title
Tile: Quilts; Bird and House T-17, BrownDescription
A two-color silkscreen underglaze print on a white tile blank depicting a large bird atop a house, and a trailing vine supporting a manicured tree superimposed with Wert’s interpretation of a calico textile pattern. The composition is framed with a rick-rack style border. It was produced in two colorways, blue and brown; see separate entries.
First produced c.1956 and soon discontinued, this tile bears the full cork backing Country Prints/Ceramo Studio began using c.1962, indicating it was reintroduced in the early 1960’s.
This tile appears in the c.1956 brochure “Country Prints Tiles designed by Robert Darr Wert”, as well as a 1957 ad for Elliots Furniture of Billings, Montana; see images.
This tile design is one of twelve panels found on a c.1953 Country Prints wallhanging titled Quilts 203 (see below), which is a graphic reinterpretation of Pennsylvania “Dutch” appliqué quilts.Made/Created
