Print: Peace & Plenty 612-1 and Who Plants a tree 612-2 Pair, aka Tree & Peace 612-1 Pair

Description

Two four-color silkscreen prints on off-white linen Peace print: emblazoned with the words, “Peace, Plenty, Independence”, and corresponding symbols for each word: Peace, a dove; Plenty, a shock of wheat; Independence: an eagle with a shield chest plate. The composition is detailed with harvest tools (pitchfork, sickle and plow), and finished with borders of trailing vines. Tree print: at center is a maxim from Poor Richard’s Almanac by Benjamin Franklin, “He who pants a tree loves others besides himself”. The maxim is framed within the trailing branches of a tree planted in a red pot resting on a low wood bench. At top a rooster weathervane carries an attached sun, moon, and star symbolizing the passage of time. Wert’s use of teal and burnt orange against the off-white linen ground makes for an interesting update to the usual red, white and blue patriotic palette. This pair is listed in the Spring 1958 Country Prints price list as Peace & Plenty 612-1 paired with Who Plants a Tree 612-2. It is listed in the January 1960 Country Prints price list as Plant A Tree—Peace 612-1, and it appears in the c.1960 brochure “Country Prints in Frames designed by Robert Darr Wert” as Tree & Peace 612-1. At various times they were printed with different color borders. These prints were produced in a choice of antique birch or flat black frames.
