Towel, Calendar: Herbs U503, 1968Description
A three-color silkscreen print on natural linen depicting herb plants, herb names, uses and symbolism. Herb related quotes are located at top ad bottom. The lower half of the composition features the calendar for 1968.
The upper quote, “Herbs too she knew and well of each could speak”, is from a lengthy poem, “The Schoolmistress”, by English poet William Shenstone (1714-63); see web link for full poem.
At bottom, “Much virtue in herbs”, is a the first half of the Poor Richard’s Almanac maxim, “Much virtue in herbs, little in men”, which speaks of the constancy of plants, and the inconsistencies of humans.
The empty days at the beginning and end of the calendar months are filled with quirky sayings related to the month. For instance, February, “Longer Days and Colder Nights”.
