Placemat: Rooster Patch 129, Mustard

Description

A placemat set with two four-color silkscreen print designs on natural linen depicting colorful roosters sitting on trailing branches or vines. Placemat: Three roosters perch on each side of the mat look toward the center as if scoping the contents of a dinner plate. Four roosters have solid color bodies, two are patterned in Wert’s interpretation of calico prints, another has his squared heart in place of a wing. An apple tops a branch on the left side. Napkin: two roosters perch at the lower left and right corners. Trailing vines line the perimeter. A heart-shaped tulip with a star is at bottom center. This set appears in the c.1955 brochure “Country Prints Mat Sets and Luncheon Squares by Robert Darr Wert”. It was produced in two colorways: red, mustard, and black on natural linen (this example), and red, blue-green, and black on white linen (see separate entry); see images. This set is described in a c.1955 Country Prints price list, “Gay variations on our original theme. This has been called “sophisticated”! Bright Red, Clear Aqua, Chartreuse and Black on heavy white or natural. Apron to match, #420 Sourwood Mountain.” Edges are straight-stitched and fringed.
