Wallhanging, Plowshares: Kitchen Pocket, Cherry Tree U800Description
A Plowshares Kitchen Pocket wallhanging with a three-color silkscreen print on natural linen depicting a cherry tree with two birds, and the Japanese proverb, “In the hum of the market there is money but under the cherry tree- rest”.
A hemmed rod-pocket at the top accepts a dowel rod for hanging, and a sewn pouch at the bottom contains a folded paper cookbook titled, “KITCHEN NOTES, PURLOINED RECIPES, DATES AND PUDDINGS”; see “Branding” entries for full cookbook.
The exterior of the pouch has a stapled calendar of brown kraft paper (January and December 1966 remain). Beneath the calendar, a quote from Poor Richard’s Almanac: “PATIENCE IS A TREE WHOSE ROOT IS BITTER BUT THE FRUIT IS SWEET”.
Launched in 1964 for the 1965 calendar year, Plowshares is Country Prints’ line of narrow wallhangings, typically 8” x 24”, the majority of which are Christian in theme. Each came with a hand printed envelope for mailing or gift giving.
Edges are serged and bound with an overlock stitch.Made/Created
