Wallhanging, Plowshares: Christmas, Nativity 708Description
A Plowshares wallhanging with a four-color silkscreen print on natural linen depicting the Holy Family on the night of Jesus’ birth rendered in the manner of medieval art.
At top, two angels, one with a horn, hover above a timber-peg structure sheltering the Holy Family. At the family’s feet are the donkey Mary rode to Bethlehem, a sheep (the lamb of God), and the cow who gave her manger for Jesus’ crib.
Above Joseph’s head, a framed placard reads, “because there was no room for them”, a portion of Luke 2:7; see web link for the complete verse.
At the base of the left roof slope, the end of a beam protrudes slightly. On the beam’s end is a serifed “w” for Wert.
This wallhanging appears in a Fall and Christmas 1965 brochure for Robert Darr Wert and Country Prints; see images.
Plowshares is Country Prints’ line of narrow wall hangings, typically 8” x 24”, the majority of which are Christian in theme.
The top hem accepts a dowel for hanging, edges are serged and bound.Made/Created
