Placemat: Yankee Doodles 112, c.1955, RedDescription
A placemat set with two three-color silkscreen print designs on white linen depicting implements from an early American home in outline and silhouette.
The placemat design depicts twenty two kitchen implements and a rooster weathervane. A trailing vine, a scrolled line, a scalloped swag, and scattered six-pointed stars complete the composition. The rooster weathervane bears Wert’s squared heart, and a similar heart is used in the signature.
The napkin design depicts three kitchen implements and a stylized hen in silhouette. The composition includes a trailing vine similar to that found on the placemat design.
c.1955, this set was produced in two colorways: pink and turquoise on white linen, or red, mustard and black on natural linen (this example). Later, c.1957, it was produced in two entirely different colorways with a different napkin design.
This set appears on a c.1955 Country Prints price list, and in the c.1955 brochure “Country Prints Mat Sets and Luncheon Squares by Robert Darr Wert”; see images.
The c.1955 price list describes the set, “Contemporary doodling with old shapes of bottles, forks and things.” The accompanying c.1955 supplementary price list also states, “#112 Yankee Doodles mat set has been redoodled!”
Edges straight stitched and fringed.
A matching tile was also produced.Made/Created
