Towel, Calendar: Mill (TK), 1964

Description

A calendar wallhanging with a three-color silkscreen print on natural linen depicting a busy stone-ender gristmill. The top right of the composition bears partial lyrics from the hymn, “Back of the Loaf”, by Maltbie D. Babcock (1858-1901); see web link: “Back of the loaf is the snowy flour and back of the flour THE MILL and back of the mill are the wheat and the showers, the sun and the Father’s will.” This calendar towel has a custom imprint for the General Store and Emporium at Memorytown, Mt. Pocono, Pennsylvania, now an inn and events venue with no retail operations; see web link. Top edge is a rod pocket to accept a dowel for hanging, lower edge is hemmed, sides are selvedged. A matching towel/wallhanging was also available; see images. This towel/wallhanging appears on a c.1965 promotional postcard for Bromley & Co. of Boston, Massachusetts, Country Prints’ New England wholesale representative to the gift trade.
