Print: Country Life 1012-2Description
A five-color silkscreen print on natural linen depicting a Pennsylvania “Dutch” farmer and wife, each with tools related to farm life. At center is a thickly outlined heart, from which springs a tulip stalk and four oval fruits. A polka dot rooster sits on the heart facing the farmer. The scene illustrates a quote from Shakespeare’s “As You LIke It”, act two, scene one, “and this our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stories, and good in everything.”
This print is one of the first nine framed prints offered by Country Prints. Initially offered only in a red painted pine frame, examples in green and black frames have been documented.
Wert explored this quote in print at least twice. Based on the signature, drawing style and the color of the frame, this is the earlier version; see images.
This print is listed in a c.1952 brochure for Churchill Barn, owned by Stanley G. Churchill, Country Prints’ lead sales representative throughout the 1950’s; see images.Made/Created
