Description

A four-color silkscreen underglaze print on a white tile blank depicting a country couple, each holding tools of daily work. Between them is a quote from Shakespeare’s “As You Like It”: “And this our life exempt from public haunt Finds tongues in trees books in the running brooks Sermons in stones and good in everything” The composition is bordered on three sides by trailing vines. Wert also used this quote as a subject for at least two framed silkscreen prints on linen; see “Framed Prints and Mounted Prints”. This tile appears in the brochure “Robert Darr Wert/Country Prints Tiles”, c.1960; see images.
