Print: Patience Tree 714-1 and Cherry Tree 714-2

Description

A pair of four-color silkscreen prints on off-white linen, each depicting a fruiting tree illustrating a maxim. Patience Tree 714-1: depicts a conventionalized apple tree bearing fruit, crowned with a pink outlined heart sprouting three leaves. Below is a maxim from Poor Richard’s Almanac, “Patience is a tree whose root is bitter but its fruit is very sweet”. The composition is finished with a teal border. Cherry Tree 714-2: depicts a conventionalized cherry tree bearing pink fruit. Birds pluck cherries above and below the tree. At the base of the composition is the Japanese proverb, “In the hum of the market there is money but under the cherry tree - rest”. The composition is finished with a chartreuse border. These 7”x14” prints appear singly in the c.1955 brochure “Country Prints in Frames” and the Spring 1958 Country Prints price list as Cherry Tree 714-1 and Patience Tree 714-2. They are listed in the January 1960 Country Prints price list in a choice of antique birch or flat black frames, and appear as a pair in the c.1960 brochure, “Country Prints in Frames Designed by Robert Darr Wert”, as Cherry Tree/Patience Tree 916-7, indicating the prints were reworked into a larger 9”x16” format (see separate entry for larger prints).

Prints are dry mounted on chipboard, backed with a second sheet of chipboard, and secured within Country Prints black painted wood frames with staples.

Inscription/Signature/Marks

On each print: “wert” in script with solid pink heart, lower left corner; “by hand” in print, lower right corner.
