Kit, Country Prints: Apron, Province Hearted 421, “I-Did-It-Myself”

Description

A do-it-yourself apron kit with a two-color silkscreen print produced in two colorways: pink, light olive, and cocoa on white linen with pink linen sashes and potholder back, or aqua, early blue, and brick red on white linen with aqua sashes and potholder back. At right, a woman and young girl in eighteenth century calico dresses pick heart shaped fruit from a tree. At left, large heart shaped fruits superimposed with calico patterns grow from a wood-slat bucket. The apron is bordered in a continuous scrolled line. Patches for the pocket and potholder bear a village scene and two young girls holding a large heart shaped fruit. Instructions are printed amongst the kit parts. Two additional pieces of unprinted solid color linen are included for the apron ties and potholder back. The right and left sections are pleated at the waist. A large patch pocket is sized to fit the accompanying pot holder. On the waistband is printed, “robert darr wert and I made this” in Wert’s typical script. Printed instructions state: “-Cut all parts on dark lines. -Dotted lines suggest hem width. -Pin pleats by matching dots on either side of dotted lines. -Fold band and band hems and basting before stitching to pleated apron is suggested. -Hem sashes and attach to band. -A and B are for a pocket and a potholder - perhaps - Have fun!” This kit appears in the c.1955 brochure “I-Did-It-Myself Aprons by Robert Darr Wert/Country Prints”; see images. A matching placemat set and table runner were also produced; see images.
