Print: Tavern Sign, Spencer 916-5Description
A five-color silkscreen print on off-white linen depicting a tavern sign for an establishment owned by I. Spencer, with a founding date of 1810. At center, an oval medallion with a scalloped edge hangs from short chains. Within the medallion is an American eagle, a triple-masted warship flying an American flag (probably the USS Constitution/Old Ironsides), a plough and three shocks of wheat.
This print is listed in the January 1960 Country Prints price list in a choice of antique birch or flat black frames, and appears in the c.1960 brochure “Country Prints in Frames Designed by Robert Darr Wert”; see images. It was offered as a single, double or triple with two other tavern signs, Angell 916-4, and Prentis 916-6.Made/Created
