Placemat: Calico Hearts 128, c.1954, RoseDescription
A placemat set with a four-color silkscreen print on off-white linen placemats and a two-color print on dyed pink linen napkins.
The placemat design depicts a woman in eighteenth century dress, a rooster, village and apple trees filled with heart shaped apples. The border of the composition is completed with scrolled line work in pink at bottom, and chartreuse at top, and a field of brown circles, green stars and pink heart shaped apples. The pink napkins are screened in an asymmetrical composition of chartreuse and brown hearts punctuated with brown stars.
This set appears in the c.1955 brochure “Country Prints Mat Sets and Luncheon Squares by Robert Darr Wert”; see images. The set was produced in two colorways: pink and green on white linen (this example), and aqua and brown on white linen, with two napkin options, solid pink or solid aqua with printed hearts.
This set is described in a c.1955 Country Prints price list, “Provincial design in soft pastels. Rose or Aqua on white with matching solid napkins sprinkled with tiny hearts. Apron to match #421 [Province Hearted].” It is also described on the Spring 1958 Country Prints price list in the same two colorways.Made/Created
