Name/Title
Towel, Wallhanging: Mill (TK)Description
A three-color silkscreen print on natural linen depicting a busy stone-ender gristmill, harvest and baking tools, wheat, a sun, a finished loaf of bread and a harvest scene.
The center right of the composition bears partial lyrics from the hymn, “Back of the Loaf”, by Maltbie D. Babcock (1858-1901); see web link:
“Back of the loaf
is the snowy flour
and back of the flour
THE MILL
and back of the mill
are the wheat and
the showers,
the sun and the Father’s will.”
The harvest scene at upper right is a reinterpretation of a scene found on an earlier Almanac wallhanging by Wert; see images.
The second photo is of Wert’s original hand-painted artwork on cardboard for this print. It is the only documented example of Wert’s original artwork for silkscreen printing.
This towel/wallhanging appears on a c.1965 promotional postcard for Bromley & Co. of Boston, Massachusetts, Country Prints’ New England wholesale representative to the gift trade.Made/Created
