Towel, Calendar: Country Kitchen (TK), 1964Description
A four-color silkscreen print on natural linen depicting an early American kitchen hearth scene. The room is furnished as both a kitchen and living space, emphasizing the idea of the hearth as the heart of the home.
Kitchen elements include cast and wrought iron cooking tools, pots and kettles, as well as a butter churn, herbs, apples, cured meats, and shelves with bowls, jugs and storage containers.
The living space elements include a high-back settle, wing chair, candle stand, spindle back chair, drop leaf table, hutch, and a cradle with the year 1964 emblazoned on the side, symbolizing the birth of the New Year.
In the calendar months are words and symbols relevant to the time of year. For instance, October has pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns in the empty days preceding the first of the month.
This example has a custom imprint for John H. Williams & Associates, Real Estate, Insurance and Appraisals, of Charlemont, Massachusetts.
A matching towel/wallhanging and tile in two colorways were also produced; see images.
This towel/wallhanging appears on a c.1965 promotional postcard for Bromley & Co. of Boston, Massachusetts, Country Prints’ New England wholesale representative to the gift trade.Made/Created
