A five-screen/six-color silkscreen print on natural linen depicting seven American eagles and a portion of the Pledge of Allegience.
In the upper half of the composition, five of the eagles appear to be modifications of eagle engravings found in early American advertising art, while one is modeled on a circular buttermold that appears in several other Wert designs. The black eagle is modeled on a cast iron snowbird; see images.
The large eagle surrounded by banners at the base of the composition is modeled on the eagle figurehead carved by John Haley Bellamy for the USS Lancaster, c.1880, in the collection of The Mariners’ Museum, Newport News, Virginia; see images and web links.
This design was offered on both off-white linen and natural linen. This example is printed on natural linen. It appears in the brochure “Country Prints by Robert Darr Wert and Neighbors”, c.1963; see images.
Country Prints produced this print in the early 1960’s. It is amongst dozens of Wert/Country Prints towel/wallhanging designs sold to Stevens Linen Associates, Inc., of Dudley, Massachusetts, c.1970. Stevens continued to produce these designs without the Wert/Country Prints identifiers throughout the 1970’s-80’s.
