Name/Title
Tile: Herbs, Sage T-76Description
A four-screen/five-color silkscreen underglaze print on a white tile blank depicting the herb sage, its latin name, a quote from an archaic medical text, suggestions for use, and the herb’s symbolism. A sage plant is potted in a copper cooking pot. A trailing vine borders the composition.
Text reads, “SAGE, salvia officinalis, “Strengthens the sinews, feaver’s heat doth swage the palsie, helps and rids of mickel woe” (from The Regimen of Health, The School of Salerno; see web link) “To season - poultry - sausage - cheese - tea - pork - stewed tomatoes - string beans. Symbolizes domestic virtue”.
This tile appears in the c.1960 brochure “Robert Darr Wert/Country Prints Tiles”, and is one of a set of six tiles dedicated to single herbs; see images.Made/Created
