Name/Title
Towel, Calendar: Doll House 504, 1968Description
A five-color silkscreen print on off-white linen depicting a doll house with the facade removed. Rooms revealed are a kitchen, parlor, bedroom and attic. Three other “rooms” are filled with calendar months. On the shingled roof a pink banner reads “1968”, the first year this design was offered by Country Prints. The artwork was developed for Country Prints by an unidentified freelance artist with the initials “BA” following Wert’s death in January 1966.
Most notable about this design is the swerve away from Wert’s beloved Americana themes in favor of the rising popularity of Victoriana. The house and furnishings are Victorian, and it is labeled, “Doll’s House circa 1868” at the base. Early American antiques found repeatedly in Wert’s work have been relegated to the attic: a spinning wheel, basket, jug, butter churn, ladderback chair and oil lamp.Made/Created
