Tile, Framed Triple: Primitive Girl/Girl With Flower 305-FDescription
A four-color tile triptych in a black painted birchwood Country Prints frame depicting a woman in 18th century dress standing beside a low table. In her left hand she holds a slipware pitcher, in her right is a red flower. Her head and upraised arm are partially encircled by a vine in an oval.
This item appears in the c.1955 brochure “Robert Darr Wert/Country Print Tiles” as “Primitive Girl”, and is listed on a packing slip/order form of the same year as “Girl With Flower 305-F”.
Tile frames were offered in a choice of natural birchwood or black.
This frame with recessed tiles is the earliest style of tile frame offered by Country Prints, c.1955.
This framed triple tile belonged to Margaret D. Wert, wife of Robert Darr Wert. The lack of a backing board may indicate this was an early product sample. The tile backs are embossed with the name of the tile blank manufacturer, Wheeling Ceramics of Wheeling, West Virginia. To the right of the name is the number 54 followed by nine dots, Wheeling’s code for the year and month of production, September 1954.Made/Created
