Towel, Calendar: Psalm 23 (TK), 1962Description
A Country Prints production sample retained as a print record.
A four-color silkscreen print on natural linen depicting two shepherds tending a flock of sheep while two angels and a bird hold aloft a banner emblazoned with the first line of Psalm 23 from the King James Bible, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” Below the shepherds and flock is the text, “anno domini 1962.” This calendar has also been documented with a 1963 calendar.
A tag sewn into the back of the upper right corner states, “Published by Church of the Renunciation, (Episcopal), Webster, Mass.
This is the earliest documented Country Prints calendar towel. The calendar at the base of the composition is printed in black and lacks Wert’s usual clever phrases tucked into the open days of each month.
Curiously, this calendar towel is signed, “robert darr wert” at a time when his standard signature was simply “wert”, and the the tag lines “country prints”, “by hand”, and “pure linen” are absent.Made/Created
