Name/Title
Towel, Calendar: Sturbridge 598, 1967Description
A calendar towel with a five-color silkscreen print on off-white linen depicting three sites and a candle making scene at Old Sturbridge Village, one of New England’s premiere heritage tourism destinations. The composition features the striking Center Meeting House, the saltbox Richardson House, and the Fitch House exterior and kitchen. Current photos of the structures appear below.
The empty days on the calendar contain quirky phrases related to each month. For instance, March, “Windy, Spring Promise”.
This is a custom commission for the Old Sturbridge Village museum shop. Wert produced at least one other towel/wallhanging for the museum; see images.
This is one of over sixty designs sold by Country Prints to Stevens Linen Associates of Dudley, Massachusetts, in January 1969. From that point onward, the designs were produced by Stevens with all reference to Robert Darr Wert and Country Prints removed. Many of these designs continued to be produced by Stevens throughout the 1970’s and some into the 1980’s.Made/Created
